Over 2020 and 2021, we had the pleasure of working with a client who wanted to extend their Victorian semi-detached house in a conservation area.
The client, wanted to add more space to their home while preserving its historic charm and character. The project happened over Covid, and so the build programme was lengthened due to delays in materials. Despite this, the project was successful, and the end result was a stunning extension that enhanced the original property’s beauty.
The client’s brief was to add a single-storey side extension that would include a toilet and utility area. We also widened the hall by replacing part of the stair wall with a balustrade. We worked closely with the client to design an extension that met their needs while adhering to the strict guidelines set out by the local council.
One of the challenges we faced was the need to use fire-rated glazing on the side extension roof, which was a building regulations requirement. However, we were able to incorporate this into the design, ensuring that the extension was both safe and functional.
Pride Architects ensured that the materials used in the extension matched the existing property. We used traditional bricks and tiles to blend the extension seamlessly with the original building. The final result was a beautiful extension with loads of glass.
The project was a successful conservation area application, and the design was later copied by one of the neighbours in a planning application.
The client was thrilled with the final result and the additional space that the extension provided. They were also pleased with the widened hall, which created a more open and welcoming feel to the entrance of their home.
In conclusion, this project demonstrates that with careful planning, expert guidance, and attention to detail, it is possible to extend a Victorian semi-detached house in a conservation area while preserving its historic charm and character. Despite the challenges of Covid and building regulations, we were able to create a beautiful and functional extension that met the client’s needs and enhanced the original property’s beauty.
