Shuahra was project Architect for an exciting residential project in Richmond, while she worked for a small architectural practice. She worked from project conception through to drafting, final design, drawings for planning, and a planning appeal.
Home to a lovely couple and their 3 children, the property is a semi-detached 1920’s period house which falls within a conservation area. Her clients wanted to extend their home and re-order some spaces to accommodate their current life-style but required help to conceptualise their needs.
Shuahra really enjoyed taking the clients through the design journey. The property had dedicated spaces on the ground floor but were not being utilised to their full potential, along with awkward level changes which disrupted the flow.
She designed a contemporary single-storey rear extension, housing a wonderful open-plan kitchen/dining space with a beautiful garden view and ample storage space. A remodel of the ground floor and other spaces enabled better use, performance and reduced the running costs of the house. Key features are the zinc-clad exterior, concealed rain-water pipes and minimal-framed wrap-over glazing which now floods the kitchen with light. This proposal future-proofed the property because it improved the energy-efficiency by upgrading the insulation, heating and overall specification of the ground floor.
THERMAL INSULATION – Thermal insulating materials were used in the walls, floors and roof to meet current Building Regulation requirements. All the new glazing was fitted with thermally efficient double-glazed units. Existing first floor windows to the rear were replaced and upgraded to double-glazed units.
LIGHTING – The windows and door locations improve the levels of natural light into the rear and sides of the property thereby reducing the need for electrically powered lighting. All new lighting are energy-efficient LEDs.
The design process was carefully considered and the result has been transformative.
At all times we found Shuahra to be professional, creative, practical and thorough.
We are not particularly great at formalising our requirements and Shuahra helped with this process, pushing us to consider a more creative vision than we started with. Whenever we questioned as to why Shuahra 'did it this way', we always figured she had gotten it right. The end product has been a house that has transformed our way of living and served us incredibly well during Covid - lots of living space, light and practical function. We would have no hesitation in recommending Shuahra to prospective clients.
