The Heart of the Home: A Stunning Kitchen Design in Sway, Hampshire

Type of Property:

Detached 1970’s 4 bedroom house

Describe the Brief:

A family kitchen with space for the whole family to be together, new utility room, and an eco-renovation with a new air source heat pump and better insulation throughout.

Challenges of the Existing Layout:

A comparatively small kitchen/dining space for a 4-bedroom house, which was dark and not ideal for a family that loves to cook healthy meals. Large living room but they spend most of their time in the small kitchen dining area.

How Challenges and Issues were Solved:

Their initial idea was to knock down the wall between the kitchen/dining room and the living room. We looked at a couple of options for this, but the separate snug was quite small. There was an unused side area of the garden that had all the sunlight, so we had a look at putting an extension to the side. This meant that the small back garden was not compromised.

This side extension could create a large family kitchen, dining, living space, which with two teenage daughters would give lots of flexibility. The existing living room could become a film room.

A larger utility room allows space to dry washing, and the cramped hallway was also improved. The clients did lots of research into sustainability issues and introduced an air source heat pump, underfloor heating, new windows, and cavity wall insulation to existing walls. The new mono-pitch kitchen extension now has a large rooflight that introduces sunlight into the space, a huge change from the previous dark small kitchen.

Thank you so much, Laura. We really love it, and already we have had guests with children, and it is great how there is space for everyone to do their own thing.
A professional couple

It was so lovely to see the winter sunlight streaming into the new kitchen when I visited. Their previous small dark kitchen has been transformed into a large flexible space which will be fabulous to cook, entertain, and do family life in.
