Varshini & Vinoth recently moved into a 1930s detached house in Sutton, Surrey, with a vision to create their dream home that would accommodate their growing family for years to come.
The couple faced several challenges, including limited natural light in their North East facing garden and the need to extend their property to add two additional bedrooms, a ground floor utility, WC, and an expansive kitchen with a dining area.
The property’s proximity to a conservation area added an extra layer of complexity to the project.
To address Varshini and Vinoth’s requirements and challenges, a full-day workshop was conducted to explore the best solutions.
Two options for the ground floor were presented.
The first option involved converting the garage into a bedroom with an en-suite, alongside an office and utility area. The existing rear outrigger would be replaced with a rear extension that featured large arched windows and rooflights, bringing in ample natural light.
The second option included moving the office to the opposite side for easier accessibility from the front. It also featured an expanded downstairs bedroom and a reconfigured kitchen and dining space, which provided a more open and spacious layout.
On the first floor, two options were considered. The first option involved building over the new bedroom/utility space to create a fourth bedroom with an en-suite. The second option included a partial rear and side extension to form a spacious master suite with luxury walk-in wardrobes and an en-suite.
The latter option was favoured due to its superior design and functionality.
Varshini and Vinoth’s workshop exemplifies the collaborative approach between the architect and the clients in transforming their house into a beautiful, functional, and future-proofed family home, despite the various challenges they faced.
"We recently bought a house and are looking to extend and make it into our family dream home. We are really happy with the service and liked the fact that she came to our house, and we were in the comfort of our own home. She went round and did measurements, and then we sat down and did a few design options together. I liked the fact that we had some ideas, and also the architect came up with her own ideas - we actually went with her ideas, which was refreshing because we didn't think of them ourselves. I'm really happy with the service and would recommend Pride Road Architects."
