Mancunian Matters: Campaign to save Lapwing Lane Canopy

Pride Road Precursor Raynes Architecture in collaboration with John Flinn RIBA, have been working with FOLLA on the Lapwing Lane Canopy, to design a sympathetic restoration. Whilst the canopy is not listed, it sits within a conservation area and is in a prominent site in West Didsbury opposite the new metrolink station.

Raynes Architecture are in discussion with the planners, the proposals are for a new glazed roof and we are looking to replace columns and brackets in the same pattern as the originals.  Money is always a factor, but the canopy has undergone a series of cheap repairs leading to the loss of 2 bays and broken drainage.

Now panes of the glass are broken and some of the cast iron brackets have
perished. It is imperative that works are undertaken soon, before the canopy
perishes.

The clients, FOLLA, Friends of Lapwing Lane Arcade have raised the majority of the money required for the restoration, but are still short, Ana Hine reports…. http://mancunianmatters.co.uk/content/291013198-dont-let-symbol-west-didsbury-die-campaign-save-lapwing-lane-shopping-arcade-still
