Here at Pride Road New Forest & Bournemouth I am lucky to live next to the sea. Watersports are a great draw to living in this area with sailing, kite surfing, paddle boarding and surfing all being very popular.
Having recently seen a client who was storing their surf boards on the top of a garage got me thinking, how is the best way to store these items?
Many of my projects are on the coast in areas such as Barton-on-Sea, New Milton, Lymington, Southbourne, Hengitsbury Head, Mudeford, Pokesdown, Boscombe, Bournemouth and Poole.
I have designed quite a few projects for clients now who have a precious collection of surfboards and need space in a new storage unit or even utility room to keep them.
The sun’s UV rays can cause the resin and fiberglass of a surfboard to break down over time, compromising its structural integrity. When possible, it is recommended to store a surfboard board out of direct sunlight when not in use.
These are the recommended steps for storing a surfboard after using it:
- Remove the wax from the surfboard.
- Clean the board thoroughly with fresh water. Remove the fins and wash the fin boxes well. …
- Keep the board in a high-quality, padded surfboard bag.
- Store the surfboard away from the elements and in a temperature-controlled zone.
So where is the best place that provides a temperature controlled zone?
Garage
Ceiling-mounted garage storage racks are the best way to store surfboards overhead so that you can keep the boards secure and indoors but still have room for cars and other items you’re storing in your garage.
Alternative ways to protect the board are to store it standing up, leaned into a corner, or in a board rack. This prevents anything from falling on it, cars driving over it in the garage, and the rack keeps it from falling and cracking an edge.
Shed
Keeping a surfboard in a weather-tight shed will also free up space in your home and garage. Not only will you be able to store surfboards in a garden shed, but other surf accessories and sporting equipment as well.
Utility room
Horizontal free-standing racks sit on the ground and let you stack surfboards of multiple shapes and lengths more securely since the horizontal orientation gives better stability.
On the wall
Vertical Storage: The best way to store a surfboard is vertically, with the tail on the ground and the nose pointing up. This minimizes pressure on the board and prevents warping. Wall-mounted racks or specially designed surfboard storage racks are ideal for this purpose.
Alternatively go for wall hooks. Some will screw right into a 2×4 beam with their own screw end. Other hooks take one extra step, screwing them firmly to a beam or support.
