Internal Remodelling and Kitchen Design, Gardner Road, Prestwich

Project Information

Year Completed: 2026

Our client says:

“We didn’t need more space, we needed the space we had to work better.”

~ Chris

A dark, compartmentalised Victorian terrace was reworked into a lighter, more practical family home through careful internal remodelling. By focusing on layout, connection, and light rather than extending, this project shows how much can be achieved within an existing footprint.

The property

A 1900 mid-terrace house in Prestwich, built with solid walls, suspended timber floors, and a traditional cut roof. The house includes three bedrooms, one bathroom, and a cellar affected by damp.

The challenge

The ground floor layout felt narrow and disjointed, with poor flow between the kitchen, dining space, and garden. Natural light was limited, and the cellar was largely unused due to damp concerns.

The clients wanted to improve how the house worked for everyday family life but were keen to avoid the cost and disruption of a rear extension.

Our design approach

We focused on reworking the internal arrangement to strengthen connections between spaces and improve sightlines through the house. The kitchen and dining areas were reorganised to feel more open and intuitive, without removing useful separation.

A compact wraparound breakfast bar was introduced to provide informal seating and subtle zoning, offering many of the benefits of an island within the constraints of a Victorian terrace.

The kitchen was completed by Made in Ply.

Alongside the layout changes, we advised on addressing damp within the cellar and how the space could be improved and future-proofed, even without a full conversion at this stage.

The outcome

A clearer, brighter ground floor layout that supports everyday use and feels more spacious without increasing the footprint of the house. The redesigned kitchen works efficiently within the available space, and the home now has a stronger connection between rooms and to the garden.

This project demonstrates how targeted internal changes can deliver meaningful improvements, particularly where budgets and space are tight.
