Internal Remodelling and Phased Extension Design
Location: Ellesmere Road, Salford
Property type: 1959 semi-detached house
Architect: Magda Haener, Pride Road Architects
This project involved the renovation of a 1950s semi-detached house in Salford that no longer worked for modern family life. Previous alterations, including a side extension and rear conservatory, had resulted in a disjointed layout and underused spaces.
The homeowners wanted to improve how the house functioned day to day while working to a realistic initial budget. They also needed a clear long-term plan that would allow future extensions to be delivered in stages.
Improving Layout and Flow
The first phase focused on internal remodelling to improve flow, natural light, and usability across the ground floor. By rethinking how the kitchen and living spaces connected, the house now feels calmer, more sociable, and better suited to family life without unnecessary overbuilding.
“Magda helped us step back and think long-term, rather than rushing into a big extension.”
A Phased Approach to Extension Design
Alongside the internal works, proposals were developed for the demolition of the existing conservatory and its replacement with a single-storey rear extension, with a future first-floor side and rear extension planned as a later phase.
Setting out this masterplan from the outset ensured early improvements added value while protecting future flexibility.
“Having a clear plan from the start made it much easier to decide what to do now and what could wait.”
A Home That Can Grow Over Time
The final design works with the original 1950s structure while improving spatial quality and adaptability. The homeowners now have a house that works better immediately, with a clear and achievable route for growth as their needs change.
“The house already feels more usable and relaxed, and we know exactly how it can grow with us.”
