Case Study: New-Build Garage in Monton
The Challenge
A family in Monton wanted to expand their garden for their children by relocating their double garage from the back to the side of their home. The garage also needed to serve as a workspace for restoring classic Volkswagens. Their initial design, by another architect, was rejected by the council for being visually imposing and out of character with the street.
The Solution
Pride Road Architects developed a revised design that addressed the council’s concerns. Key elements of the solution included:
Considered Design: The garage was designed to match the house using reclaimed bricks and roof tiles, with stone headers that echoed the existing Victorian architecture.
Massing and Location: The garage aligned with the building line, minimizing visual impact on the street.
Functionality: Inside, the garage provided enough space for car restoration, including room for a ramp and ample storage.
The Outcome
The new design was approved by the council, and construction began in May 2019. Completed on time, the garage blends seamlessly with the house and street, while meeting the client’s practical needs. The family now enjoys an expanded garden and a fully functional workshop for restoring classic cars.
This project demonstrates Pride Road Architects’ ability to create thoughtful, functional spaces that respect both client needs and planning requirements.
