1930s Semi-Detached House Redesign, Manchester

Jonathan and Cathy contacted Lisa Raynes, Pride Road Architect, to help with their idea to remove their conservatory and extend out into the garden. At the Concept Design Workshop over 2 years ago, we helped them design their open plan kitchen and living space.

Why wasn’t this home working for Jonathan and Cathy?

This 1930s semi already had a series of bizarre single storey extensions, including a narrow wrap around conservatory at the back, which made all the ground floor rooms, including the kitchen dark and internal. The rear dining room had been opened up to the front to let light in, but the resulting space was heatless and unloved. The design we worked on was to remove the conservatory and reconnect the garden with the house. We subdivided the front room to create a cosy private space and opened the back room to the rear with an elegant single storey extension. Now, the couple have a fabulous open plan kitchen living dining room, open to the garden and a cosy front room to escape into!

What do they think now?

With the actual build and decoration completed in just 3 months, Jonathan now has a beautiful space which is the envy of all his friends, ‘Its like a completely different house, all my mates just can’t believe it.’

When asked about the process, Jonathan said, ‘we’re absolutely made up with it. You [Lisa] could see what we wanted and the process was quite painless. We did the designs, went to planning, that went through, then structural designs and building regs. Its been a good process. Relatively painless.’

Would they change anything about the process?

Jonathan was clear that there was nothing they would have changed. He admitted they could have gone a bit quicker, but the pace suited them and their budget. WIth their home completed in November, they had plans for entertaining over the holiday period and showing off their new space.

This build ended up costing around £55k, and with such luxurious features like the underfloor heating and beautiful bi-fold doors, it’s clear to see why Jonathan and Cathy are so happy with their new kitchen-living space.
