The property is a detached 3 bedroom house built in 1890 in Christchurch, Dorset, close to popular primary schools. It had been split into two flats and needed a lot of work, but this made it a great, affordable opportunity to create a family home in a very desirable location.
When I first met the clients for an online workshop they had started taking walls down on the ground floor to create an open space. However they had done this with no ‘game plan’. A baby had arrived and they were left with a building site and no idea what to do about it.
With a limited budget, we looked at options to make sense of the tricky ground floor layout which had different levels and various beams and columns. This made the space hard to visualise and hard to work out what was holding up what.
However, the workshop process helped the clients to see the potential, and after reviewing the design, they decided to increase the extension size to gain more family space. The builder was the client’s uncle, which helped them afford the larger extension.
The turnout we were so pleased with...
it’s exactly how we wanted it...
Such a social space!

How lovely to see this family grow and know that their home now fits their needs perfectly!
The best bit of this project was the surprise new baby that greeted me as I went to visit the finished build! How lovely to see this family grow and know that their home now fits their needs perfectly!
