Project Overview
This project involved the loft conversion of a Victorian semi-detached house in Monton for a growing family. The objective was to increase living space without compromising the aesthetics of the existing structure, ensuring the design remained sympathetic to the home’s original character.
Scope of Work
We added another storey on top of the existing structure under permitted development rights, incorporating a flat-roof dormer to the rear of the property. This dormer was extended over the outrigger, providing sufficient space to create two additional bedrooms and a shower room in the attic. The layout maximised both functionality and comfort, with careful attention to light and flow throughout the new spaces.
Challenges
The extension required careful planning to ensure that the flat-roof dormer did not overwhelm the original proportions of the Victorian house. Maintaining the balance between creating additional living space and respecting the architectural integrity of the home was essential. We also adhered to local regulations concerning permitted developments, which required us to creatively optimise the available space.
Outcome
The loft conversion successfully transformed the home, significantly increasing the usable living space without the family needing to relocate. The new bedrooms and shower room in the attic were seamlessly integrated, providing much-needed space for the growing family. The project was completed with minimal disruption to the home’s original structure, and the family were thrilled with the result.
This was the second project I completed for this family, the first being a new-build garage. After the success of these projects, we are now in talks for an additional project to further accommodate their evolving needs. When I first met them, they had one child—now they have three!
