1930s Semi Extension and Loft Conversion in Heaton Moor, Stockport

Creating a bright, spacious family home

Creating a home that works without moving

This 1930s semi-detached home in Heaton Moor, Stockport, had been on our radar for nearly a decade.

The clients first came to us around 10 years ago for a concept design workshop, looking to explore how they could extend their home rather than move. We tested a range of options, including a single-storey extension, two-storey extension, and loft conversion, helping them understand what was possible and how each option would impact their home and budget.

Working collaboratively, we developed a scheme and brought in a quantity surveyor, Derek Gough & Associates, to cost the options. While the two-storey extension provided significant additional space, the build cost was higher than the client wanted to commit to.

So, we refined the brief.

The final scheme focused on a single-storey rear extension and loft conversion, delivering maximum impact where it mattered most.

Loft conversion in a 1930s semi

The existing hipped roof limited the usable space within the attic. By converting the roof from hip to gable and introducing a rear flat roof dormer, we unlocked the full potential of the loft.

This created a generous new top-floor layout including:

  • A spacious double bedroom
  • A dedicated dressing room
  • A private ensuite

The result is a calm, self-contained retreat that feels fully integrated into the house, rather than an add-on.

If you’re considering a loft conversion in Stockport, this type of intervention is often the most effective way to gain space without impacting the footprint of your home.

Kitchen extension and open-plan living

At ground floor, the focus was on transforming how the home works day to day.

The new single-storey rear extension creates a large, open-plan kitchen, living and dining space, designed around modern family life and entertaining. The improved layout enhances flow through the house and strengthens the connection to the garden with large glazed openings.

We also incorporated:

  • A practical utility room
  • A secondary back door for everyday use

A key architectural feature of this project is the stacked brick detailing around the openings, adding texture and depth while complementing the original materials of the house.

For many homeowners, a kitchen extension in Cheshire or Stockport like this can completely transform how a house feels and functions.

Delivered by a trusted team

This project was cost-managed by Derek Gough & Associates, ensuring the design aligned with the client’s budget from an early stage.

The construction was carried out by Oakfield Home Improvements Limited Rebecca Rowland, delivering a high-quality finish with careful attention to detail on site.

A considered approach to extending your home

This project is a great example of taking the time to make the right decisions.

Rather than rushing into construction, the clients explored multiple options, tested costs, and adjusted their brief to suit their priorities. The result is a home that feels more spacious, better connected, and far more enjoyable to live in.

We specialise in transforming traditional homes like this 1930s semi into bright, generous spaces you can grow into, feel safe in, and feel proud of.
