When I recently revisited New York City, nearly 30 years after working there as a young architect, I wasn’t expecting it to influence how I think about homes here in the UK.
But it did.
A City That Has Changed
New York has evolved. Areas like SoHo, once full of character, now feel more commercial. So this time, we stayed in Williamsburg, which has transformed from run-down to creative and vibrant.
As architects, we’re always observing how places work, how people move, and how spaces feel.
One structure that stood out was the Williamsburg Bridge. It carries trains, cars, cyclists, and pedestrians, all separated. Walking across it, completely away from traffic, feels calm and considered.
That’s good design. Not just visually striking, but genuinely improving everyday experience.
Iconic Architecture vs Everyday Living
There were plenty of highlights. A visit to Museum of Modern Art, time spent at Little Island with its sculptural landscape, and the dramatic views from Edge at Hudson Yards.
But what stayed with me wasn’t the scale or spectacle.
It was something much simpler.
The Universal Need for Space and Light
Spending time with friends who live in New York revealed a pattern. No matter how exciting the city is, people are always looking for ways to escape.
To find greenery.
To find light.
To find space.
Whether that’s a walk in the park, a trip out of the city, or time by the water, there’s a constant pull towards calmer, more generous environments.
